I guess I'll take two miles 20 minutes after dinner in 90 degree heat as a win.
I can't wait to be good at running again.

Gonna run a half-marathon in a few motnhs! not a lot of training time, but I just want to finish it, not do it fast. Up until now, my training has consisted of twice a month going on a 2-3 mile run. Hmm. GOtta work on that!
Excited :)

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/15/jewish-voters-report-call_n_126694.html
Jewish voters in Florida and at least one other state are being targeted by a telephone survey tying Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama to Palestinian causes, an advocacy group alleged Monday. ... Joelna Marcus says she became uncomfortable when the caller asked if she was Jewish, whether she was Orthodox and how often she attends synagogue.
The caller then asked if Marcus would be influenced if she learned that Obama had donated money to the Palestine Liberation Organization. The caller also asked how she would vote if she learned that someone on the Illinois senator's staff had close ties to Palestine.
Marcus, a 71-year-old former college professor, said she was furious.
"I said you're not polling me. This is un-American. This is unacceptable," said Marcus, a snowbird who lives in New Jersey and has a house in Key West. "And then this is the scary part. He said if you had not said that you were Jewish, you would have been disqualified." ...
"We see this as a disturbing but not unexpected ratcheting up of the kind of misinformation and outright lies about Obama's record that we've literally seen since he declared his candidacy," said Mik Moore, co-executive director of the Jewish Council for Education & Research.

The respect I had for McCain (which was, at some point, quite a bit) is completely gone. These ads are INCREDIBLE. Obama wants to teach 5 year olds about sex. He wants higher gas prices (from the man who resisted off-shore drilling three times since 2001). What a foul crock of shit.
I really thought at one point that McCain was going to bring respect back to the Republican Party and maybe American conservatism. Disappointing. I feel bad for real conservatives, who want small government and fiscal responsibility, because thanks to assholes like McCain et al, you have nowhere left to turn.
If Karl Rove things you've gone too far in deceiving the public (http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/14/campaign.wrap/), it's really time to rethink your campaign strategy.

So I've been in Austin for a few days, and I have a sort of mixed impression of the place.
I really don't think I'll get accustomed to the series of men honking at me, yelling out their window, leering, and catcalling. I really, really don't. Definitely the biggest negative I can find so far. It's EVERYWHERE I go outside of downtown. I'm lucky to walk 100 meters without some sort of incident. Infuriating, and I can do NOTHING about it, except for possibly flipping them off. I've convinced myself that's immature and ill-advised... but it's still quite tempting.
Otherwise, a cool city! I found a friendly little coffee shop near the house, and I've been going to enjoy the air conditioning and catch up on e-mail.
I've also met a lot of neat people. Just finished talking to a Portuguese-Swedish man who wants to start a job at Cornell, and who does capoeira. What are the chances?! The next door neighbors are a sweet twenty-something couple with cute dogs, and I met a nice guy in capoeira class who's also going to be a 1L at UT Law come Monday. Things have gone well so far, but I wish Peter had been here to explore the city with me. He gets here tonight.
Come visit Austin! Just don't wear short skirts.

AUSTINI've kept my head in the sand about moving to Texas, but I should really get on top of it. I need to pack all my things, clean my very generous friend's apartment and find him a thank you gift, plan my weekend in PA... ahh! I should be more excited about moving to Austin than I am. Fresh starts usually excite me, if only because I convince myself that this time, everything's going to be different! I'll be perfect! Elegant! Intelligent! I'll be thin, charming and well-liked, and not clumsy, and environmentally aware, and and and and... Maybe I'm becoming jaded. Maybe I'll be more excited when I have the 2000 mile drive behind me.

I'm thinking I want to grow out my hair a good 4 or 6 inches. It's currently a couple inches past my collarbone, and I want it to be long enough that I can donate it to Locks of Love (10 in) or the Pantene one (8 in) and still have a feminine style that I can pull out of my face for running, capoeira, etc.
But when my hair gets longer than where it is now, it starts hurting. Stylists always tell me I have a lot of thick hair, and I definitely start agreeing with them when it starts giving my tension headaches and neckaches.
Anyway, various people who read this have known me at basically every stage of my life, and I'm wondering if you guys have any advice on what hair style is flattering on me. I want something that's manageable for law school, feminine enough to live in the South next year, and sort of multi function enough to go from law internship to the gym (ie. not a pixie cut or butt-length hair.)
Help?

Dave Barry on the Economic Stimulus Payment
This year, taxpayers will receive an Economic Stimulus Payment. This is a very exciting new program that I will explain using the Q and A format: Q. What is an Economic Stimulus Payment? A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers. Q. Where will the government get this money? A. From taxpayers.
Q. So the government is giving me back my own money? A. Only a smidgen. Q. What is the purpose of this payment? A. The plan is that you will use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy. Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China? A. Shut up.

It really bothers me that strangers and acquaintances feel entitled to comment on my body size. Never would they go to an overweight woman, touch her stomach, and comment on how huge it was. Yes, I'm a size 2. No, you can't touch, and no, I don't care how "tiny" you think I am. Back off.
I feel like I also can't win with my food choices. If I'm eating something like a chocolate crossiant, the comments are along the lines of: You're so tiny! And you eat things like that!? The only thing you have evidence of is that I have at some point eaten a chocolate crossiant. Maybe I run 30 miles a week, or throw it up, or have just budgeted something I enjoy eating in to my diet!
And, if I have raw veggies, or order a salad a dinner, then someone feels entitled to comment on how I must really have self control to stay so thin.
FOr the record, I'm truly NOT that tiny. I carry a lot of muscle (thanks capoeira and gymnastics!), but I'm probably closer to 130 lbs than 120. 130 pounds is a perfectly normal, healthy weight, and that people think of it as "tiny!" might be a bad sign about peoples' health in the United States.

Next Thursday, I leave Ithaca for Austin, and then I'm off for Nashville before I return early early Tuesday morning. I can't believe that I am visiting GRADUATE schools. Incredible.
I'm not one for sunbathing-- in fact I religious apply an SPF 40 face lotion through the winter--, but I'm really, really looking forward to spending an hour or two in Austin laying in the sun. In a bathing suit if weather permits. vitamin D!!!!!!! It's been bteween 70 and 80 in Austin the last week... and that's the weather that's forecasted for next week. Nashville's climate is much more temperate, and probably more to my liking... 50-60 this week. I hope I dont' get sick from all the climate changes, especially since they're routing me through Denver on my way from Austin to Nashville!
Anyone have any recommendations for sightseeing in these two huge music cities?

A friend's blog inspired me to write a general post about my health, which has been sort of puzzling me for a while.
So, it seem slike I'm in pretty good health. At last check, my BMI was 20-check my waist-hip ratio is 0.7-check my body fat percentage was 16 (last semester. now it's probably 18. still fine) I'm engaged in ~60 min cardio activity at least four times a week I'm vegetarian with fish ~1-2 times/week, and a glass or two of red wine my blood pressure is 115/65, (healthy normal is 120/80)
Looks good, no? What's really puzzling to me is that my resting pulse is in the 85-95 range, and isn't below 78 or so when I'm laying in bed in the morning. I know I'm sort of small, and still young, but that still seems quite high. I know I"m not a marathon runner or distance swimmer or anything... but man, what's going on?

Receiving graduate/law school brochures makes me incredibly nervous. All the glossy pages and interesting tidbits and pictures of the campus make me think about what I'm missing by NOT going to that school. Of course, that's the point of these brochures, but I think my reaction is a bit extreme. I can't help but wonder if the grass is greener on the other side. Nerve-wracking!

I have to admit, it's realllly hard to find vegetarian food that can stand up to cabernet sauvignon. I paired it with some Emmertal cheese and Brie left in my fridge, as those are the only things I could find that even remotely went with it. Classic pairs are venison or braised lamb. Let me know how that goes :)
This wine is a light ruby, slightly more transparent than I've come to expect from Cab Sauvignon. It's pretty true to type, smelling of leaves, wood, berries and smoke. The wine is pretty high in alcohol (13.5%), and is much more enjoyable served slightly chilled (as are most red wines, I've found.) I actually found it a lot more vegetal that flowery, which is weird, considering it's from California, and not Bordeaux.
Anyway, on the palate it tastes intesnsely of blackberries, caramel and vanilla. I think it could have done with a bit less oak influence, but all in all an enjoyable 8 dollar bottle of wine!

I have to admit, this wine did not blow me away, despite my great affection for dry rieslings. I chose it because they have a good Riesling reputation, and the winery is known for being very eco-friendly. (Sidenote: wine production can be DISASTROUS for the environment: http://www.alive.com/1145a3a2.php?subject_bread_cramb=180)
Perhaps the wine would have benefited from another 6 months or so of bottle age, but I found it lacking in fruitiness. It's a very pale yellow color, and I would say that the acid level was pretty close to perfect.
If you're looking for an enjoyable, inexpensive Finger Lakes Riesling, try the 2005 Riesling, or the Wiemer 2006 vintage.
